Virgin Mobile is a well known no-contract cell phone service provider in the USA. They allow users to escape away from contact services and benefit from a low-cost solution.
Virgin Mobile is an MVNO offering prepaid phone plans and was launched in 2001. Virgin Mobile coverage is the same as you probably would expect with each of the big 4, as they are powered the Sprint 4G LTE network.
Virgin Mobile Plans
Virgin Mobile provides three different plans that all include unlimited talk and texts. The only change is the data amount. You could choose from 5GB, 10GB, or unlimited data.
The average Sprint consumer with an unlimited plan uses about 5GB of data or less per month. Keep that in mind while comparing the Virgin Mobile 5GB data plan to the Sprint unlimited plan to get yourself some major savings.
It’s important to remember that although you’re spending much less you won’t be sacrificing coverage. You will get the same coverage as any Sprint user.
- $35/month: Unlimited talk, text, and 5 GB of 4G LTE data.
- $45/month: Unlimited talk, text, and 10 GB of 4G LTE data.
- $60/month: Unlimited talk, text, and Unlimited data of 4G LTE data.
Virgin Mobile International Calling
The international calling choices for Virgin mobile plans are a little underwhelming considering other cell phone companies offer phone calls to and from Mexico for free. Virgin charges $5 a month for basic services and unlimited international texting.
It’s not a bad deal when you consider how cheap Virgin Mobile smaller data plans are, except for the unlimited package, it’s just not really worth it. There’s a second choice for international talk for double the price. It features:
- Unlimited talk to 70+ countries (landlines only)
- 200 minutes for calling 50+ countries
- Reduced rates for calling 200 other destinations.
Virgin Mobile Mobile Hotspot
For including mobile hotspot access, Virgin offers certain unique options. You could pay daily for 500MB of mobile hotspot data or pay a monthly fee for 1GB to 2GB. The daily plan is ideal for travelers in occasional need of mobile hotspot. In the meantime, the monthly option is much better for consistent business travel (within the U.S.). Once the hotspot data is used, still, the plan won’t renew until it resets the following month. Even so, Virgin will renew the plan before the end of the month when you pay earlier using their “Plan Restart” offering.
Virgin Mobile Coverage
Virgin Mobile relies on Sprint’s network, so don’t be shocked if you run into some of the same coverage and speed issues as Sprint customers.
Obviously, coverage will depend on the area you are in, which means you may get lucky and never see “No service” appear on your display screen. For this reason, we suggest checking the Virgin Mobile coverage map to get an idea of whether or not your local area is covered.
Speed on the Sprint network is the same story. Three different independent carriers pretty much came to a consensus that Sprint is dead last for speed.
We have used Sprint for some time and experienced some speed and coverage issues in both Utah and Washington state. So take those ratings as you will.
Virgin Mobile Phones Deals
Virgin Mobile leaves you with a lot of phone choices when you switch:
- Bring your own phone
- Buy a new phone
- Buy a refurbished phone
Virgin smartphone prices begin at $45 when compared with new models that usually cost over $1,000. The price ranges vary by model, memory size, and condition. Buying used or refurbished phone is a good way to save money. Always compare deals to make sure you get the most affordable Virgin Mobile cell phone price.
Virgin Mobile plans allow you to keep Sprint coverage for about half the cost! That’s crazy. Make sure you compare their prices with cheap cell phone plans from other service providers before you decide to sign up.
If you are single or simply looking for a one-line plan, Virgin Mobile does offer affordable prices. But otherwise, the limitations override the benefits.
