Practically anyone in the US is familiar with the top-tier wireless service providers. Ask around and most folks can think of Verizon.

Verizon Prepaid plans are no-contract, meaning you can go month-to-month with no long-term agreement or cancellation fees.

Customers can get $5 discount per month by enrolling in automatic bill payment or adding multiple lines to get at least a $10 discount on the 3GB plan, $15 discount on the 8GB plan, $20 discount on the unlimited plan.

All Verizon prepaid plans include unlimited talk and text in the US and unlimited texting worldwide. The 16 GB plan and Unlimited plan included unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada.

AT&T – Best full-featured plans

Prepaid AT&T Plans

AT&T is one of the largest phone networks in the USA. They have been proven for a longer period of time than T-Mobile USA, which provides them better nationwide coverage.

On AT&T, you can get a prepaid phone plan from $35/month plus tax. AT&T prepaid plans were mostly called “GoPhone” and as such, may still be referred to with this name in some places.

For a typical cell phone user visiting the US, we would recommend the $45 GoPhone plan. This will give you 6GB of  4G data along with unlimited talk and text within the US.

If you are staying in the US for an extended period of time, you might be able to get a $5/month discount by enrolling in the AT&T  AutoPay program. We wouldn’t recommend this if you’re a short-term visitor as it means your AT&T SIM card will be topped up automatically every month.

Finally, it’s worth being aware that your AT&T prepaid SIM card will be deactivated automatically if you don’t top it up again within 60 days of your previous bundle expiring. For this reason, it will only be possible to re-use the SIM card on a subsequent trip if you plan to visit the US again within a 60-day period.

All AT&T prepaid plans include unlimited talk and text in the US, Mexico, and Canada with unlimited texts to over 100 countries, along with roaming in Mexico and Canada for talk, text, and data. Here’s the difference:

  • $50/month ($40 with AutoPay): 8GB of high-speed data with mobile hotspot access. Note: Unused high-speed data rolls over to next month
  • $65/month ($45 with AutoPay): Unlimited 4G LTE data but AT&T may temporarily slow data speeds when the network is busy.
  • $75/month ($55 with AutoPay): Unlimited 4G LTE data with 10GB of mobile hotspot for use in the U.S. Note: Users should not experience speed slowdowns unless they use over 22GB of data before their billing cycle ends.

Multi-Line Discount: AT&T allows you to get up to 5 lines on your AT&T prepaid account. Adding 2 or 3 lines will get you a $10 discount per month, and adding 4 or 5 will get you a $20 discount per month. For an additional discount, set up the AutoPay option on your account.

Prepaid Page Plus Plans

Page Plus is an MVNO that is powered by Verizon. To date, it is actually the only solution to get unlimited data on the Verizon network which is something very special. It is possible to bring your own phone to the network if you so choose or in case you want to buy one directly from Page Plus.

To put it simply, if Verizon offered these plans at these prices on their own network, it could probably put {everyone else|all the other services out of business. Their pay-as-you-go plans aren’t good, though, and we advise staying away from those unless needed.

  1. Hello, I hope I can share this with your readers
I have posted this answer on a few sites asking for the best prepaid sim cards to purchase when in the US.
I work for T-mobile USA and we do hundreds of prepaid activations at my location. If you are looking for a prepaid sim card that includes local and international calling and texting as well as data for your smartphone., we have it. We have Prepaid sims that are good for 30 days or more, as well as daily plans if you are only staying in the states for a short while.
All of our plans are affordable from $10 and up depending on your needs. Here is a link to our prepaid plans https://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-plans Make sure you unlock your phones before your trip!!

  2. The only downside with t-mobile is the fact that in case you have an iPhone you won’t get 3G from them, it’s 2G only then (and therefore it’s just $2/day).

  3. I’ve been using my local carrier but Roaming charges can be ridiculously expensive. Prepaid SIM cards are definitely the way to go.

  4. I purchased a Tello prepaid SIM card I was really pleased with how it well it worked out, such good value.

  5. Thanks for this post! I have been toying with the idea of getting a prepaid cell phone plan (I have been only with AT&T) for two years now.

  6. I’m surprised you don’t include Google Fi. It’s a great service for and comes to 25ish a month if you use no data. With 1 GB of data, it’s 35 a month. If you travel abroad a lot it pays for itself with data being the same price abroad as in the US. It’s nice to get the option to be refunded any data I don’t use.
